Zosia's interworlds
Zosia has always enjoyed spending time alone, wandering around the nooks and crannies of the old town. Her peers complained about boredom, but she could find something interesting even in the most ordinary backstreet. One grey afternoon, as the wind was turning over piles of leaves on the cobbled streets, Zosia spotted a signboard she had never seen before. The modest sign proclaimed: "Bookshop Around the Corner - Books that Change the World".
Intrigued, she pushed open the heavy wooden door. The interior was darker than she expected, smelling of dust and cinnamon. Light seeped through the colourful stained glass windows, creating a mosaic on the floor. Behind the counter sat the owner - a petite old man with sparkling eyes.
- 'Hello, Sophie,' he said calmly, as if they had known each other for years.
For a moment she felt a shiver run down her spine. How did he know her name? She wanted to ask, but something stopped her. She ran her fingers over the shelves full of leather-bound volumes with titles in fancy languages. One of them looked different from the rest: it had no title at all, and the cover was covered in raised silver markings.
The old man smiled when Zosia put her hand on it. - Only a select few can open this book. Try it.
Zosia's hand trembled slightly, but she picked up the volume and opened it to a random page. At the same moment, the light in the bookshop seemed to dim, and a quiet rustling sound spread around her. The letters on the page began to swirl, forming a pulsating spiral that slowly extended beyond the pages until it pulled her in.
She woke up lying in a completely different place. Above her head was a purple sky with glittering silver birds gliding across it. The trees around her had leaves larger than the palm of her hand, and the air was becoming thick with foreign, sweet scents. At her feet stretched a path of blue stones, leading to a distant golden city on the horizon.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from behind one of the trees - a boy about her age, with strangely glowing eyes and skin covered in patterns, as if painted by a shadow. He raised his hand in greeting, and something familiar and alien sounded in his voice at the same time:
- You have finally arrived. We have been waiting for you for a long time.
At that moment, a powerful roar sounded and the ground beneath her feet trembled. Sophie looked towards the sound - something powerful was approaching from the depths of the forest, and the golden city was beginning to disappear behind the mist....
