Zosia and the householder
Zosia came to her grandmother's forest cottage. Outside the window, pine trees and an old lime tree rustled. Embers were flickering in the oven and bread smelled. Suddenly, something knocked on the metal door. "Who's there?" whispered Zosia, a little surprised.
Out of the oven came a homely little man, as small as a kitten. He had a grey cap and dust on his nose. "I am Klepek, the soul of the house," he said quietly. "The woods are angry, the bell has disappeared from the pine tree." "Without the bell, the forest does not sing at dawn." "Will you help find it, Sophie?"
Zosia took a torch and a jar of honey. "I'll give honey for Leshy," she thought aloud. The path was narrow and soft like moss. The trees whispered names and the stream was silent. Suddenly she heard a bell from inside an old stump. The stump had a small door, closed with a wooden peg. Zosia pressed the peg and the door opened a little. Two bright eyes flashed inside. "Hello?" Zosia whispered again and leaned in. Suddenly the door squeaked wider and something jumped out.
