Zone of Invisible Powers
Summer twilight was descending on the university town when Lena, Damian and Agatha met under the old, vine-covered science pavilion. The campus had already deserted a few hours ago, but they had stayed - because of some experiments they had started a few weeks earlier and whose results never ceased to amaze them.
Lena, the youngest of the three, was studying chemistry and was mathematical about everything, even her own emotions. Damian, owner of dishevelled hair and a black humour, laughed at the whole world until he stopped understanding what was happening to him. Agatha, the calmest of the two, was a philosophy student, but for the past few days she had been sleeping restlessly because every time she got upset, the world around her seemed to slow down or even stop.
It was Agatha who first discovered that something strange was happening. One rainy evening, when she was late for the bus, suddenly the sound around her stopped, the raindrops became motionless against the lampposts, and she walked a hundred metres in what could have been the blink of an eye... or an hour. When she shared this with Lena and Damian, it became apparent that they too were experiencing things that were completely unexplainable.
One day, Damian accidentally penetrated the door of his dormitory when he thoughtfully tried to open it without a key. Lena, on the other hand, meticulous to the point of pain, noticed that her fingers sometimes moved across the keyboard at such a speed that letters appeared before she had time to press them at all.
As night fell, they decided to test their abilities in an abandoned physics department. The place was shrouded in a reputation for being haunted, but none of the strange stories seemed so scary now that they were the exception. The whispers that carried the wind through the corridors mingled with their nervous giggles and short shouts when one of them did something unusual.
- 'Stop chiselling at that door, Agatha, I'll move over the wall,' joked Damian, then disappeared, leaving barely visible ripples of air behind him. Lena jotted everything down in her notebook, interrupting her experiments every now and then to recalculate what they could do.
Then a crackle sounded, and the light at the end of the corridor flashed with a strange purple glow. Everyone froze. A silhouette emerged from the darkness - someone else had also been in the building that night. Agatha felt her pulse quicken and Damian tentatively reached his hand towards the wall, ready to disappear from sight. Lena closed the notebook and looked at her friends.
- 'There's something here,' whispered Agatha, and the echo of her words hung in the air, stretched out like time around them. The purple light was getting closer, and their powers began to react, as if someone or something was testing their limits.
At that very moment, the door at the end of the corridor opened wide, and an unfamiliar, pulsing light flooded the entire space around them....
