Did You Know?

Wolf's Dawn

Wolf's Dawn
Rain clouds wrapped the horizon as Lena jumped over the hole fence at the end of Polna Street. Behind her, gasping heavily, Adaś, Paulina and Igor rushed in. The noise of the city could be heard from afar, but here, at the edge of the forest, there was almost complete silence, broken only by the singing of early blackbirds and the sound of drops falling from the leaves. Right next door, among the tall grasses, were the recently laid out photo traps by the foresters - but for Lena and her pack, this was not the most important thing that evening. For the past week, rumours had been circulating that a pack of wolves had appeared in the suburban copse. There would have been nothing strange about this, if it weren't for the accounts of the locals - the wolves were behaving unusually. They were approaching the farms, although so far they had avoided people. Their howling could be heard closer and closer to the houses, and several hens and the neighbour's dog Igor disappeared without a trace. The elderly residents began to talk about the need to intervene, but Lena and her friends had no peace about it. They decided to check things out on their own. They dashed through the tall grass, laughing nervously. When they reached the edge of the forest, the lantern light no longer reached into the thicket. Lena reached into her rucksack, taking out a torch and a notebook. Paulina, the youngest of the group, pulled out her smartphone, trying to record anything that might prove interesting. Adaś, an avid nature lover, had long dreamed of seeing a wolf in the wild, but now that they were so close, he felt anxious. Igor walked last, glancing over his shoulder as if expecting something to come out from behind them. Walking quietly, they tried not to make any noise. The air smelled of damp mulch. After a few minutes of walking, Pauline stopped suddenly, putting her finger to her lips. In the distance, between the trees, two yellow dots flashed. Lena squeezed her torch tighter. Suddenly, a prolonged howl sounded from the thicket - low, full of something they didn't know how to name. Lena's heart thudded loudly in her ears. Suddenly, from behind the bushes, a wolf emerged. His fur was darker than usual, almost black, and his eyes shone golden in the beam of light. However, he did not look frightened or aggressive. He looked straight at the four teenagers, as if their presence did not surprise him at all. Behind him, more silhouettes appeared - the entire pack, which stood silently in a row, watching the newcomers. Lena took a step forward. The wolf nodded - a gesture that was deceptively reminiscent of a human greeting. Pauline involuntarily moved her thumb across the screen of her phone, autmatically starting to record. Suddenly, a bright streak of light shot out from behind the wolf group, cutting through the crown of old oak trees. It hovered in the air, pulsating and illuminating the animal silhouettes with a phosphorescent glow. The wolves did not run away. Instead, they all looked up, and after a moment their gazes returned to the four teenagers, as if expecting something from them....
