Did You Know?

Whispers of Concrete

Whispers of Concrete
The block of flats on Blue Street was old, grey and always looked as if it had fallen asleep standing up, dreaming of the days when someone still admired it. Generations had lived there, and yet it was whispered that no one knew all its nooks and crannies. And it was on one July evening, drenched in sultry air and heavy clouds, that seven friends sat on the wide, cracked wall around the arbor. They were different - Veronica had a fire in her, Adam looked at the world through the lenses of his glasses as if trying to find the perfect frame in it, and Kuba laughed at their diversity, infecting the whole team with humour. They were also to be joined by Lena, who was usually silent, but this time she herself suggested a meeting. The boy who had recently moved from another town, Krzysiek, watched everything from a distance, a little intimidated but intrigued by the group atmosphere. Barely had it gone grey, Veronika raised her voice: - 'Oi, do you know that abandoned bedsit on the third floor? Apparently no one has looked there for years! I saw that the door was slightly ajar.... Adam pulled down his eyebrows: - Come on, why push yourself up there? There are so many other places... But Lena interrupted him unexpectedly: - I'd like to go in there. - Her voice was calm, but it contained a note of something they couldn't recognise. Maybe it was courage, maybe it was sadness, or maybe it was a desire to overcome her own fear. Silence hung between them. Even Kuba wasn't joking for a moment, just nervously turning the key ring in his fingers. Christopher exchanged glances with Veronika - he felt a familiar tug of anxiety in his stomach, intertwined with a strange thrill of excitement. No computer game had ever given such a genuine sense of uncertainty. Finally, they made a decision. They silently climbed the creaking staircase - each of them full of their own thoughts and feelings. Fear mixed with curiosity. With each floor, Adam felt his heart beating faster and Lena tightened her hand on the strap of her handbag. The corridor on the third floor was saturated with dust and the door of that bedsit was ajar just as Veronica had described. A chill and silence emanated from inside. - Shall we open it? - Veronika asked, looking at the others. Kuba nodded, Adam swallowed his saliva and Lena looked ahead with determination. Christopher felt the tension build up, ready to explode. Each of them felt like running away - or, conversely, taking a step forward. They didn't know what they would find on the other side of the door, but they felt that something important awaited them - something that would make their emotions spiral out of control.... The door creaked open even wider and, just a moment later, their eyes were adjusting to the darkness. Lena was the first to take a step - and then, suddenly, there was a barely audible sound in the depths of the flat, as if someone, or something, was waiting for them just around the corner....
