Whispers from the Old Town Library
The town was old, full of intricate streets and townhouses from a time when the world looked different. In the heart of it stood a library, so ancient that the boards on the floor creaked with every step, and the smell of parchment permeated the air even outside. Lena knew the place by heart. Since she was a child, she had spent afternoons here, sitting in the shadows of the tall bookcases, comparing the rustling of the pages to a quiet whisper.
This night, however, things looked different. A storm raged outside the window and the lamplight cast lunatic shadows on the crooked walls. Lena was cleaning the reading room when she heard a quiet giggle. She would have sworn it came from behind the encyclopaedia bookcase. She ignored it - presumably the wind had moved the window - and gathered up the pile of books to put them away.
As she reached for an old magnifying glass, she felt it tremble. The magnifying glass was heavy, decorated with a dragon-shaped ornament. Lena was already about to put it back in place when suddenly....
- Careful, please!
She stood still with the magnifying glass in her hand. She would have sworn someone was talking to her. She looked around. No one around. She thought it was her imagination playing tricks. But immediately afterwards, from the nearest table, a history textbook began to turn pages without touching, and a fountain pen blinked a shadow like an eyelid.
- Lena, hurry up. - This time the voice was clearer.
The girl slowly began to gather the books into a pile, glancing at each one suspiciously. Each cover now seemed more than just a piece of leather. Each bookmark looked like a dormant eye. Suddenly, all the items started whispering at once, creating an incomprehensible hum - as if someone had turned on a radio with a thousand stations at once.
From the depths of the library, from behind a wooden door, she heard a deeper, loud voice:
- Lena, our time is running out. You must make a decision before midnight strikes! - it echoed, and the hands of the old clock began to spin with frantic speed.
Lena stood in the middle of the reading room, surrounded by agitated books, flickering lamps and whispers that wove together into increasingly intelligible sentences. She had the feeling that the world was about to come crashing down - and she must decide what to do next....
