Did You Know?

Whispers from the Lynx Forest

Whispers from the Lynx Forest
The village of Czarny Potok lay on the edge of the vast Lynx Forest. In this very forest, long before sunset, Sara, Patryk and Igor - a pack of friends who did not know the word 'boredom' - met. Sara was curious about the world and always took her sketchbook with her, Patryk could probably recognise every sound made by birds, and Igor...well, Igor claimed he could talk to animals, although none of them quite believed it. That day, the air in the forest seemed thick with something intangible. The sun, breaking through the treetops, cast patches of light and shadow on the mulch. Suddenly, Patrick stopped in mid-step and lowered his voice: - Did you hear that? Sara looked at him uncertainly. - What's that? Patrick raised his hand, signalling for them to be quiet. Somewhere to the left of the path there was a quiet, rhythmic rustling. A fox emerged from the bushes. She was different from all the foxes they had seen so far - she held a piece of tree bark in her mouth, on which strange marks could be seen carved. Igor took a step forward. - 'Did you see that? - he whispered. - It looks like... a message? The vixen placed the piece of bark on the ground, looked at the children with her amber eyes for a moment, then disappeared between the trees. Patrick knelt down next to the find. There was something carved on the bark that resembled a map of the forest. In one place there was a strange symbol - something like an eye and claws. Before they had time to wonder what it all meant, a shattering roar, the likes of which neither of them had ever heard before, came from deep in the forest. Birds took flight and an icy shiver of anxiety pierced the air. Sara tightened her fingers on her sketchbook, Patrick glanced at Igor, who said in a whisper: - This is not any animal I know.... At the same moment, two green dots flashed from behind the nearest tree, as if the eyes of a huge, invisible being were watching them from the darkness. Something huge moved in the thicket....
