Whispers from the desk
Zosia sat at her desk after a quiet school day. On the tabletop lay crayons, scissors, glue and a notebook. The lamp in the window shone with a soft yellow light. Mum was frying pancakes in the kitchen behind the wall. Suddenly, the alarm clock on the shelf quietly sneezed twice. Mug muttered: "Hey, don't hit me, Alarm Clock!" Zosia froze and touched the edges of the chair. "Are you guys talking?" she whispered very puzzled.
"Of course!" she tapped the ruler and straightened up. "We've got a problem," added the eraser. "A letter has disappeared from your reading book." The letter A went for a walk and disappeared. Without it, the words inside tangled. The drawer groaned and shook its metal handle. "I can't open, something's holding me up," she wheezed. A pencil rustled in the corner and rolled away.
Zosia crouched down and looked under the desk cautiously. Something flashed like a small shell under the carpet. The key from the drawer rolled by itself, very quickly. It stopped at the door and popped up twice. On the other side, someone knocked lightly on the handle. The lamp blinked and the alarm clock started ticking faster and faster. "Should I open it now, or run for my mum?" she whispered.
