Whispers from an old wardrobe
It all started when we moved into my great-grandmother's abandoned house on the edge of town. The wooden floors creaked with every step, and the walls were full of scratches and mysterious marks. My parents were busy unpacking cardboard boxes and I - Cuba, a seventeen-year-old fan of old detective stories - went to the attic. There it smelled of dust, old wood and something else I couldn't name.
In the corner stood a huge, carved wardrobe. It had leaf motifs on the door and tiny, bulging owl eyes. I opened its door, expecting to see old coats, and saw an an interior full of bizarre objects. On a shelf was a hat that looked too new to have belonged to my great-grandmother, and next to it was a shiny metal ball. Suddenly I felt someone's gaze on me. I looked around, but I was alone. That's when I heard it - quiet whispering, getting bolder:
- Hey, kid... Finally someone looked in here - the whisper came from inside the wardrobe.
I froze. The ball moved suddenly and jumped slightly on the shelf, as if trying to attract my attention. The hat, on the other hand, tilted to the side, and a voice came from inside it again:
- Don't look like that, it's not a dream. There's something going on in that wardrobe.... And only you can discover what," said the hat in a melodious, slightly distorted voice.
I was convinced it was some kind of joke. But then the wardrobe door slammed behind me with a bang. In the semi-darkness, I saw a pulsating sign appear on the back wall. The objects began to talk amongst themselves - they were clearly irritated. The ball was asking the hat about the 'key' that no one had found for years, and the old silver casket was chiming, warning me of something I didn't understand.
- You have to decide, Cuba. If you open this sign, nothing will be the same again.... - said the hat and suddenly everything went quiet.
I stood in the darkness amidst whispers, beaming light and objects waiting for me to move....
