Did You Know?

Whisperer of the Lake District Meadow

Whisperer of the Lake District Meadow
A warm June evening was falling when Lena, Artur and Bartek left the comfortable gravel roads and set off on their bikes into the forest thicket. Their destination was Nadjeziorna Łąka - a place that the elders in the village talked about with a note of fear in their voices. They repeated that extraordinary people used to live there, and traces of their presence are hidden among the reeds and narrow paths. It is said that it is still possible to meet a whisperer there who knows the speech of herbs and birds. The friends did not believe in witchcraft. They liked challenges, risks and the thrill of exploring the unknown. As they waded through the damp-smelling rushes, they listened to the croaking of frogs and the hum of the reeds, which grew thicker and thicker around them. - 'This is it,' Lena whispered, first spotting the outline of a crumbling cottage with a crooked porch. The old shutters were closed, but a yellowish light was seeping from behind one of them. - I think there's someone there... - Bartek lowered his voice and stood up. Around the house were sculptures carved from logs - figures of people, animals and bizarre creatures. One of the figures depicted a woman with long, flowing hair and eyes carved from black amber. Suddenly, the door of the hut creaked open. From inside slid out a lean figure clad in a green embroidered kaftan and a long bottom of rags. - 'Do not be afraid, children,' the whisperer spoke in a low tone. - Have you come for knowledge or for rescue? Lena, though laughing, felt her heart beating faster. Artur reflexively reached for his camera to capture the moment, and Bartek took a step forward, not taking his eyes off the woman. - 'We want to explore the former Lake District Meadow,' he replied confidently. The whisperer nodded and, with a movement of her hand, invited them inside. Inside the cottage, the air was thick with the smells of dried herbs, resin and damp earth. Old books lay on the table and there were bags full of mysterious contents all around. - 'Every place has its secrets,' the whisperer sighed and pointed them to an old map spread out on the table. - But before I tell you anything, you must know that not everything is what it seems. Time passes differently in this village. A sudden thud and a rustle from behind one of the walls broke the silence. Something - or maybe someone - was moving behind a thin curtain. Lena, Artur and Bartek looked at each other, simultaneously feeling growing anxiety and excitement. The whisperer only smiled mysteriously, looking at them from under her squinted eyelids. At that moment, a soft, melodious chant rang out from behind the curtain, as if coming from very far away, although it was right next door. The friends held their breath, uncertain of what would happen in a moment....
