Whisperer from the Lysian Forest

Whisperer from the Lysian Forest
The Lyska forest stretched for miles, dark and wild, overgrown with spruce trees so dense that even moonlight had difficulty squeezing through the coniferous boughs. Adrian, an ethnology student, crossed it with a rucksack, a notebook and a dictaphone. He had been preparing for this expedition for months - the legend of the ancient creatures that were supposed to survive here kept him busy. The locals he spoke to in the surrounding villages would look away at the sound of the word 'Bor'. The ancestors supposedly whispered about Leshy, the rusalka, the whisperers who heal with water from springs and cast spells on illnesses. Adrian was delighted - here, in the 21st century, could such a thing still smoulder? He wandered along a narrow, overgrown path, raising his torch. Suddenly he twitched - out of the bushes emerged the petite, agile figure of an old woman with her flaxen hair braided. Dressed in a long greyish kaftan, she looked at him sharply from under her bushy eyebrows. In one hand she held a wicker basket, in the other a shabby shawl. - You're not from around here," she remarked in a voice as quiet as rustling leaves. - Why have you come here, boy? Adrian was silent for a moment, then hastily explained that he was writing a paper on ancient beliefs. The old woman came closer, pulling out her shawl. There was a calmness from her eyes, but also something disturbing that he couldn't name. - 'What do you say to seeing what others can't see?' - She asked and looked at him penetratingly. - But remember, the Bor does not like strangers. A sudden icy wind blew from behind the trees, and something rustled in the thicket that Adrian could not identify. The stars disappeared behind the clouds. The old woman nodded for him to follow her. The boy hesitated for a moment, feeling a shiver run down his spine. Would he dare to take the next step and go deeper into the heart of the ancient stories of Bor Lyski? Just when he was about to make his decision, a quiet, ominous muttering came from behind the nearest tree....
