Whisper of the Library Shelves

Whisper of the Library Shelves
Whenever it rained, Zosia, Igor and Lena met in the city library. The library was housed in a dilapidated building from two centuries ago. The dark, tall bookcases formed a veritable labyrinth, and the floors creaked with every step, as if they told their own story. On this Wednesday afternoon, the rain drummed against the window and trickles of water trickled down the windowsill. Zosia busied herself between the fantasy literature shelves, Igor browsed through comic books and Lena, as usual, rummaged through the oldest volumes on the last bookcases, where even the librarian rarely looked. At one point, Lena noticed something strange - one of the books was crooked, and next to it on the shelf was a broken pencil case. When she touched the pencil case, it sighed. She froze as she clearly heard a quiet: "Well, at last!". She moved away abruptly, knocking down a stack of sheets of paper that slid down with a rustling sound, as if they wanted to communicate something. Igor and Zosia immediately came running over, and Lena described in a whisper what she had just heard. They looked at each other in disbelief, but there was no doubt - the pencil case blinked its zipper eye and spoke again, this time louder: "I have waited a long time for you". Two pencils emerged from inside and began to talk about how boring it was not to write for so many years. One of them in a hoarse voice suggested: "Go to the third bookcase from the door, there's something there that might interest you." The friends, exasperated and a little frightened, couldn't help themselves. They slipped past the bust of Copernicus, passed a couple of strangely creaking armchairs on the way and reached the aforementioned bookcase. Suddenly they heard quiet laughter was coming from inside an old globe on the topmost shelf. Igor climbed up on his toes to turn it over. The globe squeaked, stopped at one point and spoke in a deep, serious tone: "Are you ready to learn about something you never even dreamed of?" At that moment, the lights in the library went out abruptly. Shadows threw themselves across the walls and the bookcases began to whisper quietly, as if conferring about what to do with the uninvited guests. Igor gently moved his hand over the spine of the oldest book on the shelf, feeling a chill and a slight tremor under his fingers. Suddenly, he felt a small secret drawer open under his hand. A soft, bluish glow came from inside....
