Did You Know?

When the curtain falls

When the curtain falls
Rain drummed lazily against the roof of an old hall in the suburbs. Immediately in front of the entrance, a crowd loomed, drawn by colourful posters announcing one evening - the Lunaris Night Circus. Lanterns flashed overhead and the smell of popcorn and candyfloss mingled with that of wet tarmac. Among the guests was a group of friends - Lena, Kuba, Zuza and Marek. This was to be their first circus in years, but none of them admitted out loud why something was drawing them here. Maybe it was the fascination with mystery, maybe it was the promise of adventure - or maybe it was just the desire to escape from everyday life. Inside, the hall flashed with lights. Acrobats flew through the air and an illusionist with his hair tied up in a silver ponytail made objects levitate just above the audience. The clowns kept the children amused, although a few of the older spectators looked at them with a bit of concern. There was something strangely exciting about the place, as if the air smelled not only of sweets but also of secrets. When the twins appeared in the arena - inconspicuous, with bright eyes and identical gestures - Lena noticed that Marek had gone pale. "Do you know them?" she asked in a whisper, but he only shook his head and stuck his gaze into the arena. The show began with the usual tricks, but the twins began to exchange glances between each other, as if they were having a quiet conversation. In the middle of the show, the lights dimmed. There was silence for a moment, then a single shout rang out. Among the swirling spotlights, one of the twins... disappeared. After a second, all the lights went out. When they flared up again, the other half of the duo was also gone. There was a growing murmur of clear anxiety among the crowd, and the question was in the air - was this still just a show, or was something beginning that no one was ready for? Zuza squeezed Lena's hand. "We need to discover what's going on here," she whispered, and Lena already knew that on this night the boundaries between circus and reality would be erased....
