Voice from Behind the Glass
The unusual changes in the town of Lukovo began when Lena, a 17-year-old architecture enthusiast, came across a forgotten laboratory on the top floor of an abandoned polytechnic. Had it not been for a thunderstorm that chased her away from the bridge sketch she had planned for the evening, she probably would never have decided to enter the building. However, the downpour and her fascination with places full of history won out.
The laboratory looked as if time had stopped here half a century ago - thick layers of dust covered elegant gauges, giant rulers and steel compasses, and on the shelves stood bizarre geometric models whose purpose she could only guess at. Lena had never seen so many tools at once, all made with attention to the smallest detail.
The sound of a notification came from her backpack. She opened it, but her phone - despite the aeroplane mode being on - had just displayed a new message: "You are not alone here". She ignored it, recognising it as a mischievous prank by the weather app.
She moved deeper into the room and wiped the dust off the largest telescope on the tripod. At one point, something rustled quietly. She moved closer when a voice suddenly rang out:
- 'Hey, be more careful, I'm not young anymore,' protested the metallic instrument she touched.
Lena withdrew her hand, opening her eyes wide. After a moment, a second voice rang out, as if from inside a huge logarithmic slide rule:
- Sorry about him. Not much entertainment here since the lab closed down.
The girl froze with her hand in the air. She tried to tell herself that it was just an oversensitive mind after too many hours without sleep. But the voices repeated themselves, this time joined by quiet laughter from the corner of the room where the glass menzies stood.
The instruments not only spoke, but recognised in her someone who could listen to them. It emerged from the conversation that they had been waiting for decades for someone to help them solve something they don't want to talk about at first. They only suggest that they need Lena and that it is no coincidence that she ended up here.
As the girl sat down next to the old projector, the lights on the dashboard began to flash around her. Suddenly, the whole room lit up with a pulsating light. The door, which had been unlatched a moment ago, closed with a bang. Lena froze as she watched one of the circulars begin to draw a mysterious line independently on the deserted desk.
- 'Now we're going to show you something,' said a voice from behind the glass menzies.
At the same moment the lamps went out and Lena felt a shiver run down her spine....
