Did You Know?

Vikings of the Misty Fjords

Vikings of the Misty Fjords
In the north, where the cold sea meets sharp rocks, amidst fjords lit by the silver light of the aurora borealis, lay the settlement of Stormheim. It was a place where everyone knew the tales of the fearless Vikings, but not everyone knew that the most adventurous spirit lay in the youngest inhabitants. Leif, the 15-year-old son of a blacksmith, had a reputation for being brave and a bit of a daring prankster. His best friend, Yrsa - a year older than him - often remarked that her head was on a swivel when Leif lacked sense. Their pack also included the quiet, thoughtful Ivar, who had an unusual talent for solving puzzles and reading runes. One morning the fog was so thick that even the ravens avoided the bay, and the adults forbade going beyond the wooden palisades. Leif, however, could not sit still. - 'If we only keep behind our mothers' backs, we'll never know what's hidden on the other side of the fjord,' he whispered to Yrsa and Ivar while the elders were busy checking the fishing nets. Under the cover of the fog, the three friends snuck ashore and slid the small, old boat into the water. They rowed quietly, hoping that no one would notice their absence. They traversed the silent, milky surface until finally a small, rocky promontory they had never seen before emerged before them. On the shore lay something that bore no resemblance to any boat they knew. As they approached, they spotted a wooden structure overgrown with strange growths. It was covered with runes that Ivar had never seen before - this is what stopped his gaze for a while longer. At the stern of the boat was a carved dragon with jade eyes that reflected the light of the aurora, though the fog was as thick as milk. - Where did it come from? - Yrsa asked quietly. Leif was already clinging to the side of the unusual boat. - 'Maybe we'll find something inside,' he whispered excitedly. All three of them exchanged glances. Leif's heart was beating faster than usual. As he stepped over the threshold of the strange boat, he felt a slight shiver; not just from the cold. Below deck, among the old ropes and crates, he spotted something that shouldn't be here. Zero sound, just the sound of breathing and the beating of their hearts. Then the boat shuddered, as if something had moved under the planks - and they stood in the semi-darkness, cut off from the shore by fog and water. Something or someone was there with them. And then there was a quiet, metallic rasp from under the deck....
