Did You Know?

Victor's internal compass

Victor's internal compass
The forest around Phantom Isthmus was no ordinary forest. Victor could say with conviction that if there are places that feel a person more than they feel themselves, this was one of them. As he walked back along the winding road with his bike, the gps seemed to suddenly lose its orientation. The screen glowed blank and the air had the aftertaste of moss mixed with fear. It was June. His phone vibrated in his jacket pocket, Messenger notifications, but Victor didn't feel like writing back. The last argument with his mum was still ringing in his head - louder than the birdsong outside the window and clearer than the music in his headphones. As he passed the next bend, a building blurred among the trees. An old school villa with shabby railings, tucked in among alders and spruces. Victor had never seen it before. He felt a weight rise in his stomach - curiosity mixed with fear. He stood at the gate leading into the deserted courtyard. The door to the villa was ajar. He was lifted by something more than the need for adventure. It was as if someone's emotions from outside had penetrated inside. When he entered, the first thing he felt was an icy breeze. The interior was full of old posters, blackboards and faded notebooks. However, this was not what surprised him most. In the school auditorium, where there used to have to be room for performances, sat a group of people - his age, although dressed very differently, as if taken out of another time. One of them, a girl in a long jumper, looked straight at Victor. Her eyes were glassy, but not from crying, but as if filled with something hard to name. Next to her, a boy with hair braided into dreadlocks began twirling a lighter in his fingers, and the quiet crackle of the fire echoed against the stage board. - 'Hello,' the girl spoke up quietly. - 'You're here because your emotions have been locked away for too long. Here... everything you don't show takes shape. Victor took a step back. He felt his own anger, grief and shame begin to materialise, forming colourful, twitching silhouettes. One of them slid out closest - it resembled a shadow with its own eyes. - 'You must know that not all emotions are friendly,' chuckled someone from behind. - But each one is waiting for you to notice it. There was silence in the room. Colourful figures began to circle Viktor, each whispering something different in his ear. He felt his heart beating harder. The door through which he had come slammed shut with a bang. This was the moment when he had to decide: to follow the voice of one emotion or to let himself be carried away by its power. Victor looked into the eyes of his shadow and took the first step forward....
