Vanishing bridge in the Valley of Mirrors

Vanishing bridge in the Valley of Mirrors
Dusk was slowly falling over the Valley of Mirrors, dyeing the mountain tops purple. Susanna, Igor and Maks were standing on a hill overlooking a meandering river that glittered like silver. At their feet lay a valley about which stories circulated throughout the town - especially about the Stone Bridge, which was said to appear only when the sky changed from day to night. Susanna adjusted her rucksack on her shoulder. "Have you heard that? Apparently when the bridge appears, you can see something in the water that isn't there on land." Igor laughed briefly, crossing the overgrown path. "Don't believe everything the old baker says. But... well, let's check it out. Now that we're here, we're not going backwards after all, are we?" Maks looked at the valley in disbelief. "But if the bridge is indeed there.... should we climb it? Scary stories don't come out of nowhere." "That's what I want to check!" - smiled Susanna. "Besides, what could go wrong? After all, all you have to do is not do stupid things." They followed the quiet sound of the water, in the thickening twilight. The valley was getting colder and colder. Suddenly, a grey fox ran out from behind the bushes. Before they had time to say anything, the animal dashed under their feet and disappeared into the thicket. Igor looked uncertainly at his friends, but none of them uttered a word. They reached the riverbank. Where there should have been only empty water, a shape began to emerge before their eyes. The stones slowly formed an arch, as if an invisible hand was building it especially for them. In the reflection of the water, the bridge was illuminated by a warm light, even though it was getting dark all around. Maks was the first to come closer. On the stone, barely visible, were carved some kind of markings - letters that had definitely not been there before. "Look, I think it's something in Latin..." he whispered, crouching down and trying to decipher the inscription. Susanna and Igor joined him, staring intently at the sign. Suddenly, a clatter came from across the water - as if someone on the other side of the bridge was hitting stones. The sound repeated itself once, then a second time, getting clearer and clearer. Igor breathed out loud. "I don't think it was the wind. What's there?" The bridge stood before them, inviting, but stepping onto it seemed like a challenge that could change everything. For a moment, no one moved, as if trying to understand if it was even worth taking that first step....
