Unstoppable clock
The creaking staircase led Tymon and Lidia deeper and deeper beneath the historic library. Dust rose in the air with each step, and the flickering torchlight brought out shadows that seemed to dance around them.
They had no right to enter here, but curiosity was stronger than the prohibitions. Everyone in town said there was more than just an archive under the library. The stories about the old watchmaker, who disappeared more than a century ago, seemed just a legend - until now.
In the farthest corner of the cellar, Lidia spotted something unusual: a huge brass clock, partly covered by cobwebs. The dial had no numbers, only strange symbols, and the hands stuck motionless. Tymon delightedly moved his hand across the surface.
- 'I wonder if it works? - he whispered, though it echoed along the walls.
Lidia found a small metal box next to the clock. Inside lay a key - an old one, decorated with labyrinth-like engraving. Without thinking, she slid the key into a slot on the side of the clock. They heard a quiet click, then the clock started ticking, slowly at first, then faster and faster. The air shook and the torchlight began to ripple.
Suddenly, everything blurred as if in a kaleidoscope. The ceiling and floor disappeared, and all around was a whirl of colours, sounds and smells, as if someone had suddenly opened hundreds of books from different eras at once.
When the whirling stopped, Tymon and Lidia were already standing somewhere else entirely. Above their heads, the sky was suffused with an orange glow, and all around them stretched a city they did not recognise. The sounds of strange machines came from afar, and people were dressed in outfits they had never seen.
- Did we... really... - began Tymon, but he was interrupted by a sudden noise. Next to him, on the wall, was the familiar shape of a clock. The dial was now pointing to something else, and the hands were beginning to move in the opposite direction.
At the same moment, they heard footsteps. Someone was approaching fast, carrying something shiny in their hands. They had to make a decision - hide or face the stranger - because the clock was not going to wait for them....
