Unknown Echo
The night was unusually quiet, even for an academic estate on the outskirts of the city. Lena sat at her desk, looking at the dark window where the soft light of her laptop was reflected. She tried to concentrate on her essays, but for the past few days she had been unable to take her mind off what had happened in the lab. She had always felt that something set her apart, but it was only there, during an accidental short circuit, that she realised how different she was. Blue streaks of light appeared in her hands and a metal shelf of tools began to levitate.
For the next few days, Lena tested her skills in hiding. Each time she tried to lift something by force of will, the tingling on her skin became stronger and stronger, and the objects reacted faster and faster. However, she wasn't the only one who felt uncomfortable lately.
Marek, her roommate from the next room, had been having strange dreams for several days in which he seemed to hear other people's thoughts. The first time, he thought it was fatigue and too-loud conversations in the corridor. But now, during a session in the library, he suddenly heard a clear voice in his head, even though no one next to him was saying a word. "Don't be afraid of what you can do". - the unfamiliar voice repeated to him like a mantra.
One evening, Lena and Marek met by chance on the roof of the dormitory. They were both looking for solitude, but instead found anxiety and mutual understanding. When Marek confessed to Lena what was happening to him, he saw relief and... fear. They decided to discover together what was happening to them.
Meanwhile, something strange began to happen around them. A new lecturer appeared at the university, Dr. Gorska. She was too polite, too confident and looked at Lena and Mark too often during lectures. Posters about mysterious missing students appeared in the corridor and figures in dark cloaks flitted across campus at night.
One evening, as Lena was experimenting with her powers in an empty lecture theatre, she suddenly heard quiet footsteps. She looked towards the door and saw the silhouette of Doctor Gorski. Their gazes met. A slight, puzzled smile appeared on the lecturer's face.
- 'I know who you are, Lena,' she said quietly. - And I know what you are capable of.
At the same moment Marek felt a foreign, icy voice in his head: "This is the beginning. Choose wisely whom you will trust."
Lena did not yet know whether this was the beginning of a great adventure or the beginning of trouble. But she felt that decisions would be made that night from which there would be no turning back....
