Underground mirrors
We knew the place only from stories told by our elders - a massive, neo-Gothic building located on the outskirts of the city, the former library of the University. By day it was more like an abandoned manor house that no one wants to touch. At night, its dark windows glistened in the moonlight, as if inviting daredevils inside.
One afternoon I, Ola, persuaded my friends Igor and Veronika to do a little exploring. Initially, we just wanted to take some photos for a project, but something was bothering me ever since I saw an unmarked room marked on the city plan just below the building. Some kind of underground?
Trudging through the cracked stairs and corridors, we laughed at our own fear. The scuffed lettering on the walls, old globes and cupboards full of dusty books seemed harmless. However, in the basement, behind a rusty door, we came across something unexpected - an iron hatch, locked with three padlocks. Igor was trying to open it with a staple, Veronika was anxiously taking pictures. I noticed that one of the padlocks was newer than the others.
Eventually, with a lot of determination and a bit of luck, we managed to open the hatch. Behind it was a narrow, descending staircase. There was a chill coming from the darkness and the air smelled of damp and dust.
We descended slowly, lighting our way with torches from our phones. A corridor awaited us at the bottom, its walls covered with mirrors - each different, each curving the reflections in an unnatural way. But when we tried to walk down the corridor, we found that our reflections couldn't keep up with the movement. When Ola waved her hand, her reflection did so a second later. Igor turned pale, and Veronika whispered quietly for us to turn back. But then a strange glow appeared from the darkness at the end of the corridor, as if someone had lit a candle in the distance....
