Under the cover of amber leaves
On a frosty October evening, as the mist drifted lazily between the trunks of old oak trees, Lena, Michal and David wandered along a forest path on the outskirts of town. The Yew Forest, as the locals called it, had a reputation as a place that was better not to walk after dark. There were rumours of disappearing animals, strange footsteps and unexplained noises. For them, however, it was going to be a normal autumn hike - or at least that's what they thought.
Lena struggled to suppress a shudder. "Do you really think there's something here?" she asked, looking underfoot to avoid tripping over roots.
David, with a torch attached to his rucksack, smiled from the corner of his mouth. "Just old legends. If something lived here, we would have spotted it long ago."
Suddenly Michal, walking ahead, stopped abruptly. "Wait. Did you hear that?" Everyone froze. Amidst the rustling of leaves, a quiet buzzing could be clearly heard, as if someone was shaking a huge bundle of keys.
They walked on until they came across a clearing in the middle of which stood something that should not have existed. A luminous amber dome floated above the moss and damp earth. The liquid light rippled, creating mystical patterns. Lena cautiously stepped closer. "This... looks like a portal," she whispered, her voice ringing out in the silence like a bell.
A whisper came from inside the dome, unintelligible, yet intriguing. There was a feeling of electricity in the air, as if the whole forest had suddenly come alive. David held out his hand - the light immediately responded with a flash. Michael looked at his friends questioningly. "Shall we pass?"
Before they had time to decide, something moved on the other side of the portal. A mysterious shadow flashed right past, and from the luminous sheet emerged a figure whose face they could not recognise. They froze in stillness, not knowing whether they should retreat or perhaps move on.
