Transfer at Vireo Station
It was one of those sultry June evenings when the air stands still and the light from the lanterns spills harshly down the cobbled streets. They were sitting on a wall behind an abandoned warehouse - Leon, Basia and Kajetan. The summer holidays had barely begun and they were already bored with board games and the old skatepark.
It was Basia who first dared to propose breaking into the old Vireo train station. It was said to be haunted, but neither of them believed it. They usually avoided the place because it looked disturbing even in the daytime - the tracks disappeared into the scrubby bushes, the old hall was in danger of collapsing, and towering over everything was a turret with a rusty clock that had probably stopped a hundred years ago.
They slipped through a hole in the fence, laughing nervously. Every step on the gnarled gravel sounded too loud. They stopped by the main building. The glass in the doors was all intact, which was strange, because broken windows and spray marks reigned everywhere in the area.
- 'Oi, look,' said Leon, pointing to a black door with a metal sign saying 'Platform 9'.
- I haven't seen that before - muttered Basia, touching the cool handle.
Kajetan shrugged his shoulders. - 'Probably locked.
The door, however, gave way with a quiet creak. Behind them, a corridor led down, underground. It smelled of dust and damp there. The light of the telephones barely made out the contours of the bricks. Above their heads stretched metal pipes and cables, from which water occasionally dripped.
They walked slowly, their hearts beating faster with each step. Suddenly, just around the bend, the corridor ended in a tall, semi-circular door. In the middle was a brass knob in the shape of a strange bird.
- 'Try it,' whispered Basia to Leon.
Leon hesitated, but held out his hand. As soon as he touched the knob, it glowed blue. The door opened slowly, letting in a brightness the colour of the morning sky, although it was already dusk behind their backs.
The three friends looked at each other. They knew they were just crossing a boundary that could not be undone. Beyond the door stretched a land completely different from the one they knew from their daily walks.
They took the first step. Behind them, the door closed with a deafening bang, and in front of them loomed huge, silvery trees, under which twinkled skylights larger than sparrows. At the end of the forest clearing, a figure in a purple cloak was looming, and in his hands a strange, whirling object glittered. The air trembled with strange sounds, and everything seemed familiar and alien at the same time.
Suddenly the figure raised its head, looked straight at them and held out its hand. Leon felt the ground beneath his feet begin to ripple slightly. Something emerged from the darkness at the sides of the clearing, moving almost silently. The friends exchanged glances - neither of them was sure if this was the start of an adventure or something much more dangerous....
