Traces under the snow window
It was Christmas Eve in a small town. The lights were shining, and the air smelled of gingerbread and oranges. Zosia and Kuba were decorating the Christmas tree with their mum. Dad was hanging paper stars over the table. Outside the window, snow was quietly falling like sugar. Donut the dog slept curled up by the radiator.
Suddenly, there was a soft ringing sound. "Is that Santa’s sleigh?" whispered Kuba with a smile. "I think it’s our ornament," said Zosia.
The sound rang again — but this time, from the courtyard. The children looked at each other and then at the door. Mum put her finger to her lips and listened.
Behind the glass, a little world twinkled like a star. There were glowing pawprints in the snow. "Maybe it’s a reindeer?" whispered Zosia to Kuba.
Dad opened the door and let in the cold air. The glowing footprints led straight to the old shed. Zosia took a step forward and looked inside. In the darkness, something moved and flashed.
