Torch and whispering from the courtyard

Torch and whispering from the courtyard
On Halloween, our street sparkled with lights and costumes. Lena had finished carving a pumpkin and Maks was holding a torch. It smelled of bonfire smoke and leaves after the rain. A black cat stood in the gate and blinked its yellow eye. Grandma said it was a sign of adventure, not trouble. Lena today put on her witch's hat without the crooked broom. The plan was simple: three houses for candy, then the backyard. There, behind the garages, was Mr Olek's former greenhouse. It hadn't been lit in years, and today it was flickering. The moon and moving shadows were reflected in the glass. Maks whispered: "Let's check it out before the others come in here right away." Lena nodded and moved first, slowly and carefully. The heavy door creaked as she touched the cold handle. The air was cool and smelled of earth and old glass. A pumpkin with a smile carved into it lay on the bench, but empty. Someone had left a handful of seeds next to it, arranged like an arrow. The arrow pointed to a steamed-up door at the back of the old greenhouse. Under the coating of steam, three scratches could be seen, like letters. Lena blew on the glass and read: L, E, N. Her heart hammered once, like a hammer on a bell. "Is this a joke?" asked Maks, but his whisper also trembled. A quiet clink came from behind the table, as if someone had moved a jar. The torch flashed and went out, then lit up more faintly. In the light there were shoe tracks, small and wet. They led straight to a door on which an old bell hung. Lena grabbed the string, but felt a chill on her fingers. It wasn't the wind. Someone stood on the other side and also held the string. The bell moved on its own, once and again, louder and louder. The door handle vibrated and the glass trembled like water. Maks took a step back and Lena gasped for air. The handle dropped, and on the other side someone said her name.
