Tolek the hedgehog and the secret door
At the edge of the forest lives Tolek the hedgehog.
He carries a small rucksack and a yellow torch.
He likes his night walks in the clearing.
The owl Mela and the hare Fik are his friends.
Today the wind is blowing and the grass is humming.
Under the old oak tree, Tolek notices new footprints.
Little paws mark the wet ground everywhere.
The footprints glow like dewdrops.
They lead straight to the trunk of the oak.
In the bark he sees a round door made of sticks.
On the handle someone has hung a silver feather.
The feather flutters gently in the wind.
Tolek knocks three times: pop, pop, pop.
"Nobody?" whispers Fik and perks his ears.
Mela tilts her head and says: "I hear the bell."
A quiet rustling and giggling comes from inside.
Tolka's torch blinks as if she is afraid.
The door creaks and swings open a little.
A golden light streams out from inside.
Someone takes a step just beyond the threshold....
