Time plane over Lysina

Time plane over Lysina
Lena ran her fingers over the surface of the parchment, feeling the coolness of the centuries-old paper under her skin. It was late at night, and the rain was drumming intensely on the roof of a wooden hut in a clearing near Lysina. Bartek sat opposite her, staring at the map lying on the table, found a dozen minutes earlier in a forgotten attic. They were both seventeen years old. Although holiday trips to the mountains had long since given way to foreign trips among their peers, they still chose the Beskid wilderness and Lena's grandmother's house. This time it was supposed to be an ordinary night with board games and guitar. Reality soon slipped away, however, when they accidentally shifted an old suitcase in the corner of the attic and found a map that, in addition to the familiar paths, also featured a strange spiral symbol and handwritten inscription: "Wake up the time that sleeps under the Baldy". Bartek, always more rational, tried to trivialise the strange discovery. Lena, curious by nature, could not resist the temptation to solve the strange riddle. Even before midnight, they snuck out into the dark forest with torches and a map, following the clues leading through the dense ferns to an old stone circle, which Lena's grandmother insisted was the remains of an ancient ritual. For a moment they hesitated, standing in silence, broken only by the distant hooting of an owl and the sound of the wind. Lena placed her hand in the centre of the circle, where the spiral symbol was barely visible under the layer of moss. Suddenly she felt something cold and metallic under her fingers. It was a small, strange device, resembling a bit of a compass, a bit of a watch, with a disturbingly flickering pointer. Bartek reached for the device, and Lena read silently the inscription on its back: "Turn if you're ready for more than just the path of time". They looked at each other, holding back laughter masking the mounting tension. Bartek, probably surprised by his own courage, turned the pointer spirally to the end. In an instant, the world around them stood on the edge of silence. The wind stopped and the trees seemed to freeze. For a moment nothing happened - until everything began to blur like a photograph under water. Lena felt the ground disappear from under her feet, and the image of her grandmother's cottage, the Beskid glade, the circle and the forest turned into a kaleidoscope of colours flying around. She grabbed Bartek's hand and closed her eyes. The sensation of flying through boundless space lasted only for a fraction of a second, but when they finally felt the ground beneath their feet again, there was no longer any trace of the present around them - not a road, not a cottage, not even familiar trees. Instead, sounds came from the top of Lysina: the clatter of heavy wheels, raised voices and a metallic sound they had never heard before. Bartek squeezed Lena's hand tighter and she held her breath, looking in the direction from which the lights were coming - completely alien, pulsating like signals from another world. As Lena picked up the device, its pointer began to spin restlessly, and the clock struck twelve o'clock. At the same moment, a crash sounded right in front of them - a cloaked figure emerged from behind the dark rocks, carrying something that looked completely out of this era. Bartek and Lena froze, unsure whether they should approach or run away, but they didn't have time to decide - the figure turned towards them, its face reflected in the light of the pulsating lights.
