Thursday attic mirror
Lena had a plan - after several years of living in her small Krakow flat, she decided it was time for a change. She uncluttered the bookcase, moved the sofa under the window, and took to the somewhat forgotten attic. Old cardboard boxes, faded linen, a few chairs from her student days - everything smelled of dust and the past.
There was something else hiding behind one of the old boxes. A mirror. It looked perfectly ordinary, as if it could stand in the room of anyone with even a passing liking for old things. Framed in dark wood, the panel yellowed. Lena decided to refresh it and give it a second life - after all, a new place always needs a bit of magic.
When she moved the mirror into the living room and wiped the dust off it, she noticed a strange crack running right through the middle of the panel. She moved her finger across it, and then something seemed to tremble slightly in the air. In the reflection, for a fraction of a second, she saw not only herself, but also.... another room. Light was streaming in there through a huge, tall window, and on the windowsill stood strange flowers she had never seen.
Lena squinted her eyes. She looked again - only her own reflection was already staring back. "I was predicting," she laughed. But when she moved the mirror to another angle, out of the corner of her eye she saw the flickering shadow again. Over the next few days she began to watch it closely.
On Thursday evening, when she returned after a long day at work, the flat was quiet. Lena brewed herself some tea and sat down opposite the mirror. She stared at the sheet for a long moment. Suddenly, the sheet trembled. It went completely black for a second, then something that looked like a door appeared in it. From behind it came a muffled light and a quiet, disturbing whisper that she could not recognise.
Her heart began to beat faster and questions popped into her head: Should she approach? Is it safe to do so? And who - or what - was the shadow that moved just outside the door?
