Did You Know?

Through the Mists of Arkania

Through the Mists of Arkania
A thick fog shrouded Harven Castle just after sunset. Erik, with his inseparable notebook under his arm, sat on the windowsill of his room in the highest tower. Through the slightly ajar window, he could feel the chill of the summer evening and hear the quiet calls of lazy birds. He was waiting for Lena. When the clock struck midnight, Lena appeared under the window, threw a rolled-up map to Erik in a quick motion. "Got it?" she whispered, looking around cautiously. Erik nodded. He was worried that someone might hear them, as they planned to leave the castle at night and explore the ruins of the old stables on the hill. They had noticed for weeks that something unusual was happening in the area. Strange lights danced over the fields, a slight vibration could be felt in the air, as if reality in this place was impermanent. The pages of an old book they had stolen from the library clearly suggested that there was a portal in the area - although none of them used the word aloud. They walked quietly down the stairs, beckoned by the echoes of their own footsteps. Outside, the world was milky and unsettling. The fog muffled every sound. When they reached the ruins, Lena illuminated the stone walls with her torch. Shadows danced between the ivy-covered crevices. Just then, Erik felt a chill under his foot. He bent down and brushed away the moss - underneath was a stone slab with engraved symbols he had never seen before. Lena took a piece of chalk from her bag and carefully redrew the marks in the margins of the map. Only their accelerated breathing echoed in the silence. And suddenly, in the midst of the fog, something unexpectedly lit up in front of them: light began to seep through a gap in the wall, flickering with colours neither of them could name. The castle, the ruins, the mist and the light - everything suddenly swirled. Erik and Lena exchanged glances marked by both fear and excitement. They took the first step towards a crevice illuminated by an unusual glow, not knowing what awaited on the other side....
