Through a translucent door
Lena has always had the feeling that our reality has some cracks in it. On quiet summer afternoons, when the light applied itself to the walls of her room at odd angles, she thought she saw something out of the corner of her eye that didn't quite fit into the known world. But it wasn't until this holiday that something happened that surpassed even her wildest assumptions.
It was July, the hottest in years. The town where Lena, her younger brother Maks and their friend Igor lived stretched lazily between hills and overgrown lakes. The parents had gone away to work for a few days, leaving the siblings in the care of their grandmother. However, Lena and Maks did not plan to spend these days sitting at home.
It was Igor who first came up with the idea of a trip to an old house on the edge of the forest. For years, all sorts of stories had been circulating about it, and people had shunned it. But the kids didn't believe any of the stories - after all, they were thirteen, fourteen and fifteen years old, they were beyond that. Or at least they thought they were.
They arrived at the site on a hot, sultry evening. The house seemed almost unreal: the windows were broken, the door barely hung on its hinges, and feral shrubs sprouted all around. Igor proudly pulled a torch from his pocket. Maks looked around uncertainly, but Lena could feel the excitement. They went inside, trying not to make any noise.
The interior of the house looked as if time had stopped - dust covered every corner and remnants of wallpaper were falling off the walls. For a moment, it seemed that they would find nothing here but spiders and a pile of old newspapers. But then Lena noticed something strange in the depths of the corridor.
A pale light shimmered behind a slightly ajar door. Lena, without a word, walked closer. The door looked different from all the others in the house. They were translucent, as if made of frozen mist, and they trembled slightly when Lena touched them with her hand. Igor and Maks stood behind her, opening their eyes wide.
- 'I don't think this is normal...' - whispered Maks. Igor nodded, but didn't take a step back.
Lena pulled the handle. The door opened noiselessly. Behind them stretched a corridor full of coloured light and swirling petals of light that seemed to float in the air like skylights. The air was thick with the smell of something unknown and exciting.
All three stood on the threshold for a moment, unsure whether to cross to the other side. Lena felt her heart beating faster. The door slowly began to close on its own. Lena looked at Maks and Igor - they had the same gleam in their eyes.
One thing was certain: if they didn't pass now, they might never get this chance again.
They took the first step, and the world swirled around them. What awaited on the other side, they had no idea....
