Did You Know?

The Watchmaker of Whisper Street

The Watchmaker of Whisper Street
Krakow, Wednesday afternoon - just before the first spring storm. Lena was shuffling quickly through the cobbled street of Whispers, holding a cup of coffee in her hand, which unfortunately had already cooled down. She was tired after yet another high school class and dreamed of going home, throwing her backpack in the corner and taking a breather. However, when her gaze casually fell on the small, almost invisible signboard "L. Vistula Watchmaker", something drew her in. The shop looked like a relic of a bygone era - behind the dusty shop window stood dozens of clocks, from pocket watches to huge standing ones, suspended in stillness, as if time flowed differently inside. She pushed open the heavy door. The bell wailed softly, piercing the silence. Inside, the air smelled of wood and old paper, and in the light of an old lamp limped a man with a grey beard, bent over a watch with an exposed mechanism. - Good morning... - Lena spoke up shyly, looking at the rows of unfamiliar timepieces. The watchmaker raised his gaze, and his eyes - so blue they almost glowed - measured her calmly for a moment. - 'The watches can hear, you know? - he said quietly. - You have to be able to listen to them. Each one has a story. Lena smiled uncertainly. She felt a slight embarrassment, but on the other hand... Curiosity had always been her greatest curse and blessing at the same time. - Could you take a look at this one? - She pulled out her grandfather's broken, centuries-old watch. The watchmaker took it with anointment. - 'This one... this one is special,' he murmured, as if he was talking to an old timepiece rather than to her. Suddenly, from somewhere behind the bookcase, there was a muffled sound that did not resemble the ticking of any of the clocks Lena knew. Rather, it was a quiet, drawn-out cry, the echo of a long-unheard melody. Lena turned and noticed a door ajar that had not been seen before. Behind them, a golden light pulsed. - It's not for everyone - the watchmaker nodded towards the door. - 'Before you go in, there's one question you have to answer: are you ready to really hear time pass? Lena's heart beat harder as she took the first step towards the unknown passage, aware that from now on, ordinary everyday life could turn out to be far more magical than she had ever imagined....
