The Slavic Forest and the Enchanted Fern Blossom

The Slavic Forest and the Enchanted Fern Blossom
In the old days, when the sun was hotter than today and the evenings were full of singing frogs, in a small village at the very edge of a large forest lived the siblings Berry and Staś. One morning, Berry and Staś decided to go into the forest to pick berries for their grandmother. They bowed to their mother and father, took their baskets and set off along the forest path. The forest was humming green and the birds were singing their curious melodies. As soon as the children went deeper, they smelt the cool spruce scent. The sun flashed between the leaves and last year's leaves rustled under their feet. Suddenly, a little gnome with red hair and wearing a red cubby jumped out of the bushes. He had a wide smile and sparkling eyes. "Good morning children! I am Boletus, the guardian of this forest!" - he shouted cheerfully. Berry and Staś froze for a moment, as they had never seen a gnome with their own eyes before. "Can you recognise wolf tracks?" - asked Borowik eagerly. The children shook their heads. The gnome giggled and then showed them the strange prints in the mud on the ground. "That's what they are! But don't be afraid, the local wolf is nice and keeps an eye on things," said the gnome and winked communicatively. Suddenly, a grey squirrel ran out from behind the bushes with a huge nut in its mouth. "Borowek! Boletus! The fern flower has bloomed in the Whispering Glade!" - she exclaimed breathlessly. The gnome immediately jumped for joy. "This is something special! The fern flower only appears once a year, and on this one night!" Berry and Staś looked at each other with wide-open eyes. "Can we see it?" they asked almost simultaneously. Borowik thought for a moment, then nodded. "But you have to be careful - not everyone can find him. Other woodland creatures like this place too. Do you want to try your luck?" The children nodded eagerly. The gnome set off with a quick step into the forest, and Berry and Staś followed him, getting more and more excited. The further they walked, the thicker and darker the forest became. Along the way, they met an owl hooting quietly from a branch and a robin dancing by a stream. When they reached the Whispering Glade, the air became quieter than usual and something golden shimmered among the leaves. The children approached the place where, according to Borovik, the fern flower had bloomed. Suddenly, they heard a quiet rustling behind their backs....
