The secret of the underground hall
Friday afternoon. Most of the students had long since left the walls of the old high school, but Marek and Julia stayed a while longer in the corridor, looking for a lost memory stick with an important project. The clock on the wall showed 5:12 p.m., and the soft light of the setting sun was seeping through the open windows. The last echo of footsteps carried through the empty biology room.
- 'Maybe you fell out by the cloakroom? - Julia asked, nervously combing through her pockets.
- 'I've already checked there three times,' muttered Marek. - But maybe one more time... - Suddenly his gaze stopped on something unusual. Behind the plant cupboard standing in the corner, someone had carelessly stacked a thick layer of old newspapers. Sticking out from underneath them was a piece of metal doorknob.
- Was it always this messy in here? - asked Julia, coming closer. Together they moved the cabinet. The newspapers turned out to be a curtain for a door leading straight down, under the floor.
They both looked at each other with a silent question in their eyes.
- 'You first,' whispered Julia, laughing uncertainly.
Marek grabbed the handle and pulled. The door opened with a creak, revealing a narrow staircase leading into the darkness.
- Do you seriously think of going down there? - asked Julia.
- Maybe there's a... memory stick in there? - chuckled Marek jokingly, trying to hide his own anxiety.
Suddenly, a muffled sound came from downstairs, as if someone had moved in the depths of the cellar, and a shadow scurried across the crack. They both froze, wondering what - or who - was hiding beneath the old school....
