The secret of the red drawer
Zosia was very fond of our school library. The rain tapped on the windows like fingers. After lessons she stayed there for a while. Mrs Ela was stacking books on a trolley. Zosia reached for a thin blue book. Something fell out of it onto the floor. It was a piece of paper and a small key. Her friend Maks was whispering next to it.
On the piece of paper was written in capital letters. She read: Look for the red drawer, Sophie, please. Mrs Elu, are there red drawers? - she asked. Mrs Ela looked around with a smile. - Probably in the old catalogue, by the window. Zosia and Max walked up to the catalogue. One drawer was painted red.
The lock clicked when they used the key together. Inside lay a rolled-up plan of the library, mysterious. On the plan shone a silver dot by the basement. Suddenly they heard a quiet ringing behind the bookcase. The bookcase vibrated and swung open a narrow, dark passage. Maks squeezed the torch and nodded at Zosia. A whisper came from behind the passage: Come in, but quickly.
