The Saga of the Forest Watch

The Saga of the Forest Watch
Beyond the seven hills and the wide river, in a small village surrounded by the big, green Borow, lived Staś and Zosia. They were best friends and every day after school they played on the edge of the forest, where old oak trees grew and tiny streams babbled. One day, as the sun hid behind a cloud, the children heard a strange ticking coming from under the thick ferns. Staś crouched down and Zosia helped him push back some leaves. An old wooden clock appeared before their eyes. This was no ordinary clock! Instead of numbers, its dial showed drawings of animals: a wolf, an owl, a frog and a bear. The hands moved very slowly, as if they were telling the story of the forests themselves. Staś whispered: "See, there's an inscription here!", and they both read the engraved magic words in the ancient Slavic language. The clock gently trembled, and forest spirits, skylights and quiet voices asking for help began to appear around the children. "Who's there?" - asked Zosia in surprise. Suddenly, an old owl's voice came from the depths of the Forest: "To keep the forest from falling asleep forever, you must find the key hidden in the deepest shadow of the oak tree." The children looked at each other in surprise, and the clock flashed with a soft green light. Staś and Zosia, holding hands, set off into the depths of the forest, where something they had never seen before was waiting for them....
