The pencil case that whispered

The pencil case that whispered
Class 1B was almost as quiet as a teddy bear wardrobe. The sun was drawing golden stripes on the floor and a white chalk mark was left on the blackboard. Lila swung the door open and slipped inside like a cat. She had forgotten her pencil case. After all, without it you can't draw cats in wellies or write the letter '£' with a long tail. On her bench lay a blue pencil case with white dots. Lila reached for the lock. At the same moment, something quietly sighed: "Phew, finally!" Lila pushed her hand away. She looked around. No one in the classroom. Just a rubber ball under a cupboard and a big globe in the corner. The pencil case moved and fluttered its lock like a wing. "Hey, Lilo," squeaked a tinny voice. "It's us. We can talk now." Lila carefully undid the lock. Inside, they smiled at her: Pencil Witek, slender and always ready to sketch; Crayon Raspberry, pink as pudding and a little broken but very brave; Eraser Puff, soft and smelling of strawberries; and Ruler Simple, transparent and very serious. "Good thing you're back," murmured Witek. "We have a case..." "Shh! Do you hear?" he was interrupted by Puff and scrambled like a little pillow dog. Lila put her ear to the ground. Somewhere very close by something was quietly making: "tick... tick... tick..." "It's from the side pocket," whispered the Straight Line. "Open it. Gently." Lila lifted the flap in the centre of the pencil case. On the bottom, between the paper scraps, lay a silver button in the shape of a moon. It had a tiny thread hole and shone like a drop of water. It pulsed with a soft light and spoke in the quietest whisper in the world: "I'm lost." "Gee," faltered Malina. "How pretty!" "Where did you come from?" asked Lila very softly, as she sensed that the button was upset. "I was shimmying on someone's coat," replied the button, "and then I fell off. I rolled until I got stuck under your bench. Someone grabbed me along with the papers. Now I don't know where my home is." Lila felt her heart grow as warm as fresh cocoa. "We'll help," she said confidently. "That's right," confirmed Line. "We need to find a trail." Then something strange happened. When a ray of sunlight touched the button, its radiance spread across the bottom of the pencil case and formed a narrow, flickering arrow. The arrow pointed to the edge of the bench, then the floor, and then the bookshelf. "It's like a luminous snake!" enthused Puff. "Behind that line!" ordered Witek, who loved leading expeditions. Lila slipped a button into the side pocket of the pencil case, but left it open a little so he could see. The utensils sat comfortably. The girl embraced the pencil case like a lantern and moved slowly between the benches. The flickering arrow moved across the floor, skipped through gaps and twisted at the leaf-shaped carpet. Along the way, the blackboard sponge whispered to them: "Good luck! Don't step on the wet!" The chalk in the box rang out a quiet "ding-a-ding", as if she were holding up her thumbs. Even the big clock above the door blinked its second hand and whispered: "Don't waste time." The arrow stopped by the map bookcase and climbed the wall slowly like a luminous spider. Lila stood on tiptoe. "Higher is impossible," muttered Malina. "Need a plan." "A simple plan," replied Line. "We stand steady. Lila climbs on her toes. I measure. Witek draws a path in his mind. Poof keeps watch. Button shines." Lila leaned against the bookshelf, careful not to knock anything off. A luminous arrow leapt from the edge of the shelf to the side of a large, colourful globe. The arrow trembled, twirled once, twice, and suddenly the the globe moved. At first timidly, as if preparing to dance. Then more strongly. It began to roll across the floor, exactly where the button pointed. "Oh my!" squealed Puf. "He's alive!" "Calm down," said Witek, although his graphite was bouncing slightly. "Maybe he wants to help us." The globe rolled straight into a big green cupboard of art supplies. The wardrobe was old and liked to creak, but now it swung the door open on its own without a groan. Inside it smelled of paper, paint and a bit of dried leaves. A flickering arrow crawled inside, on the bottom shelf, and went off, as if to say: "Here." Lila crouched down. There was another sound coming from inside the cupboard. Very quiet, like a box full of beads breathing. "Ding... dzyn... dzyń..." - far away, deep, as if from behind a row of paper rolls. "Do you hear?" whispered Lila. "We hear," replied Line. "And we feel it. The button glows stronger." Indeed, the silver moon in the pencil pocket glowed like a skylight. He whispered: "It's close. It's very close." Lila slid her hand into the cupboard, pushed aside a roll of tissue paper, then a box of glitter. Then a piece of wood slid out of the lowest drawer, as if someone had gently pushed from inside. The drawer groaned - not out of anger, more of a takeover - and slid out another centimetre. Inside, it was as dark as a tunnel. "Hello?" beeped something thin and cheerful, but the echo swallowed the rest of the words. The pencil case fluttered its locks. "Quick," advised Witek. "Before the trail goes out." "Before someone closes the door," added Puff and sneezed glitter that covered everything in silver dust. At the same moment, outside the classroom door, they heard the clatter of light footsteps in the corridor. Someone was carrying something that clanked like keys. The door handle vibrated and began to fall slowly, and the globe - as if it had suddenly got wind in its sails - rolled faster, straight towards Lila and the open drawer....
