Julka loved evening walks in the Old Forest. She always went there together with her younger brother, Max. The forest was just behind their house, and after dark, colourful lanterns appeared among the trees to light up the path. One evening, when Julka and Maks went outside, they noticed something strange. All the lanterns in the forest had gone out! No light, just shadows and rustling leaves. - Maks, do you see that? - asked Julka, holding his hand. - It was always bright out there! - answered Maks quietly, trying to look between the dark trees. The girl felt a thrill of excitement. Who or what could have extinguished all the lanterns in the Old Forest? Julka knew every path, but everything looked different in the dark. Every sound seemed louder, and an owl hooting suddenly made Maks squeeze her hand tighter. Julka decided: - We have to check it out! We'll definitely find out what happened. Maybe someone needs help? So they walked slowly towards the tallest tree in the forest, under which the biggest lantern usually shone. The path was dark. At one point a shadow suddenly flashed over their heads! They stopped abruptly. From afar they heard a quiet murmur and a sort of muffled giggling.... Julka and Max looked at each other frightened, but at the same time very curious. What was lurking behind the bush next to their favourite bench? Was it someone who had put out the streetlights? They decided to take one more step forward, although their hearts were beating a little faster than usual....
