Did You Know?

The Midnight Bell

The Midnight Bell
It was Christmas Eve, and snow was falling silently on the town. Zosia hung lights until the living room sparkled like a lake. In a box of baubles she found an old silver bell. It had polished edges and initials she didn't know. "Is this yours, Grandma?" she asked, but Grandma was already snoozing. Zosia put the bell to her ear and heard nothing. On the back someone had carved the words: "Call me at midnight". It sounded like a joke, but the metal was warm. The clock in the kitchen was ticking and time slipped slowly by. Zosia crept to the window and opened the curtain. The street was asleep, only the lantern drawing circles in the snow. She hid the bell in her pocket because she didn't know how to wait. When midnight struck, the bell chimed on its own, although no one moved it. The lights on the Christmas tree flashed as if saying something in a whisper. Patterns appeared on the glass, similar to a star map. The lines led straight to the park, where the city Christmas tree stands. Zosia slipped on her boots, cap and jacket, and stepped out. The snow creaked loudly and a bell guided her like a compass. At the fountain she saw footsteps, glowing with a pale blue streak. They ran to the Christmas tree, on which a large star was missing. "After all, it was here yesterday" - she whispered, feeling a shiver of curiosity. Something rustled in the branches and the last light went out. The bell snapped out of her hand and hovered over the snow. And then someone, unseen, said her name from above.
