The Lost Room in the Old Library

The Lost Room in the Old Library
The old library in Maple Street always seemed to Victoria to be a place full of history. Every shelf, creaking floorboard and marble bust of long-forgotten scholars had its own story. But on this rainy afternoon, as Victoria and her friends Maximilian and Lena waited under the heavy wooden portico until the downpour eased a little, neither of them suspected that it was today that they would stumble upon something truly mysterious. They sat on the floor between shelves of atlases, discussing a project in history. Lena reached for a thick, dark leather-bound book, intending to check something in the index. When she opened the cover, an old, yellowed page slid out from inside. Victoria picked it up immediately, and Maks looked over her shoulder curiously. On the sheet was a handwritten plan of the library from decades ago. "Look, there's something strange here," whispered Victoria, pointing to a spot on the plan. "There should be some kind of room between the storeroom and the reading room. But now there's just a wall there." After just a moment, Lena was already digging through the internet, looking for information about possible alterations to the building, but found nothing. "Maybe they should just remove that room?" suggested Maks, although she could hear the growing excitement in his voice. An hour passed, the library almost deserted. A hazy grey was oozing from behind the windows. Taking advantage of the commotion at the counter, the three friends cautiously shuffled towards the storeroom. They stopped at a wall that, according to the old plan, was supposed to conceal a passageway. Victoria moved her hands over the surface - cold, smooth, but a slight metallic reverberation could clearly be heard from underneath. "Wait... What's that?" Maks noticed a small, almost invisible button between two slats near the floor. They all looked at each other, their hearts beating faster. Lena held her breath and Victoria slowly, hesitantly, pressed the button. Something deep in the wall creaked. A section of the panelling swung slightly away, revealing a narrow crack. A cold and the smell of damp books wafted from inside. The three friends exchanged quick glances, then Victoria wordlessly slipped inside first, with the torch held tightly in her hand. Beyond the crevice, nothing was as they had expected. It was twilight, and in the depths there was what looked like cupboards full of papers, overturned chairs and... a tangle of cables under the ceiling. Then they heard a quiet rustle, as if someone or something had moved in the corner of the room. They didn't yet know what was waiting for them, but already neither of them was thinking of escaping. There, in the dark room, something was clearly waiting for them....
