Did You Know?

The Invisible Touch

The Invisible Touch
The City of Night was a place where day and night blended seamlessly. Neon lights reflected in puddles on the dark streets, making reality more blurred than ever before. Olaf, an eighteen-year-old computer science student, had always felt at home in such places. But this evening something was different. On his way back from university, he stopped in front of the window of an old computer shop. A man on the other side of the glass was playing with something resembling a miniaturised steam engine, the parts of which shimmered with a metallic glow. Olaf paid no attention to the people; he just looked at his own reflection in the glass. He had always felt a bit alien, but today... This feeling was reinforced several times over. As he approached the door of his block of flats, the light looked at him through the hazy lantern. Olaf closed his eyes and, in his imagination, held out his hand. He felt a gentle tingling sensation pass through his fingertips. It was something that happened more and more often: he felt as if he could 'touch' the electricity, control its flow. He walked through the dark corridor. The lift was not working. Reflexively, he put his hand to the panel. To his surprise, the button illuminated itself and the mechanism squeaked, as if for a moment an old machine had come to life. The light in the lift door flicked on, then settled down with a yellowish glow. Olaf smiled and started for the flat on the seventh floor. In his room, he sat down in front of his computer. He felt a strange energy building up inside him that he could no longer ignore. Unexpected errors began to appear on the screen, code boxes popping up before he even had time to click anything. He closed his eyes, and lines of code danced in his head, arranging themselves into new solutions that he hadn't understood until recently. Suddenly, his phone vibrated. A message from an unknown number: "We know what you can do. Meet me tonight at midnight in Neon Park. Bring your computer. Don't try to tell anyone. It's for your own good." Olaf's heart sped up. Was someone watching him? How did they know about his abilities? He stared at the phone screen, feeling that this was only the beginning of something much bigger. A deep silence fell in the room, broken only by the quiet hum of the night from outside the window, as Olaf contemplated whether to take up the challenge...
