Did You Know?

The Invisible City

The Invisible City
The sun was slowly setting over the grey blocks of flats on the Knot estate, casting long shadows over the empty playground. The four of us sat there - me, Lena, Artur and Kajetan. Each of us was already somewhere between childhood and something completely new for which we had no instruction manual. At first glance, our lives were no different to thousands of other teenagers - school, laughing on the bench, arguing with our parents and endless conversations on Messenger. But ever since these strange things started happening, we knew something was changing. It started with Lena. She was already known for thinking faster than she spoke and winning every quiz. But that day, during a maths test, she saw the answers in her head before the teacher had time to hand out the cards. Confused, she told no one. Only to me, in the evening, she whispered on the phone: "It's like ... seeing numbers in the air". A week later, Artur scored a goal at a school tournament - against the laws of physics, because no one would be able to bend the track of the ball like that. He then felt as if the whole world had slowed down for a second. "Maybe you were lucky," Kajetan mocked, but you could see that he still thinks about it to this day. Kajetan, on the other hand, had his episode in a shop. A thief tried to snatch an old lady's wallet. Kajetan, skinny as a stick, grabbed him by the arm - and suddenly, as if he were made of iron, held the type down until the police arrived. He himself could not remember how he had done it. I... Well, for a long time I thought I was just an ordinary boy. But a few days ago, at maths, the teacher's words started to sound strange in my ears. It was as if he had two voices in his head at once - one talking, the other whispering. After a while, I realised that I could hear the thoughts of those sitting in the classroom. I was then terrified as I had never been in my life. When we finally dared to tell each other everything, we came to the playground in the evening. The air was heavy with unspoken questions. Lena was plucking leaves from a bush and throwing them under our feet. Artur stared dully at his phone screen, while Kajetan prowled around the square like a predator. I tried to calm the thoughts - my own and others' - that flooded my head like a rushing stream. We didn't know where these abilities came from or what we should do with them. The night was getting darker and darker, and the wind carried the sounds of the city with it. And then we saw it - a strange, pulsating light coming from under the entrance to the old underground car park. None of us remembered it ever being open, and now - the door was ajar, and a faint blue glow was coming from inside. We looked at each other. Everyone knew that if we turned back now, we would always regret it. We moved slowly towards the entrance. With every step, the light became more and more intense, and we could sense something in the air.... electrifying. Just then the first bang sounded.
