The Invisible Attic Room
Zuzka, Igor and Lena had no intention of sitting at home that Saturday. However, it was raining so hard that even their cat, Pushkin, didn't want to stick his nose out of the threshold. So they were sitting on the old carpets in the living room, poring over board games, when Zuzka suddenly fell silent and looked up at the ceiling.
- 'Do you think this attic is really as boring as Grandma says it is? - she asked in a whisper.
Lena shrugged her shoulders, but Igor had already stood up. - I haven't been up there for a long time. Let's go, maybe we'll find something cool.
Pushkin followed them up the creaky old staircase. The attic was full of dust and the smell of old books. A faint rainy glare came in through a small window. Among the boxes and suitcases, Zuzka noticed something strange - a piece of wall just under the roof seemed out of place. It was cleaner, as if someone had recently touched it. Lena ran her hand over the board and felt it deflect slightly. Underneath it hid a tiny door with a brass handle on which hung an old-fashioned key.
- Do you think we should open it? - Lena asked, feeling a thrill of excitement.
Igor was already turning the key, which turned surprisingly easily. The door swung open, and an unfamiliar chill blew from inside. It was dark inside, but they could feel something else - as if the air was vibrating with tension and sounds they couldn't name. There was a quiet ticking coming from inside, and delicate phosphorescent dots flashed between the beams.
- Maybe we shouldn't ... - began Igor, but Zuzka was already bending down to look inside.
Suddenly, something shimmered from behind the door. It seemed that the space on the other side was vibrating, like an oil spill on water. The door opened wider, letting a cold breeze into the room and the smell of jasmine perfume, completely incongruous with the dusty attic.
The three friends looked at each other, their hearts starting to beat faster. They didn't yet know what was on the other side of that mysterious door - but they knew that if they entered now, nothing would be the same again....
