The rain beat against the old windows of the Korytow School Complex, blurring the yellow light of the lanterns in the car park. Veronika was sitting in the last bench, twisting a pen in her fingers, when the maths teacher interrupted in mid-sentence - the light went out for a moment, then flared even brighter. The bell rang to announce the end of class, and Veronica, Kuba, Nina and Patrick exchanged glances. "Did you feel that?" - whispered Nina as they moved down the grey corridor again. "As if something ... came through the building." Outside, they talked for a while longer, waiting for the rain to ease. Veronica glanced down at her fingers - she had the feeling that for a split second something had ignited under her skin. Patrick laughed, joking about the radiation from the microwave in the buffet, but Cuba was thoughtful: "I know this is going to sound weird, but I've been having a recharge all day of sort of.... energy. Seriously, it's like my body is electrified." They decided to meet up that same evening. As the sky brightened and the town slowly fell asleep under a heavy fog, they shuffled through the deserted streets to the abandoned railway station. It was here, among decayed beams and graffiti, that they were to talk without witnesses. When Veronica reached into her backpack for a torch, her hand seemed illuminated by a soft blue glow. For a moment, everyone froze. Suddenly, as if in response, Nina floated a few centimetres above the ground. Patrick shouted in disbelief. Kuba grabbed his temple as the light in the lowered lamp flicked rapidly. Outside there was the sound of footsteps. Someone was approaching the station. Everyone froze, holding their breath as the stranger's shadow shifted behind the dirty glass. This was the moment from which nothing was to be the same again....
