The Fluffy Gang from Café Under the Hat

The Fluffy Gang from Café Under the Hat
Not every café is ordinary. Under the Hat, a tiny establishment on the corner of Moose and Spring Streets, smelled a little of coffee, a little of candyfloss, and most of all.... a mystery. Felt hats ranging in size from 'mushroom' to 'Himalayan tent' hung on the walls, the floor creaked underfoot, and from behind the counter peeked Susanna, the barista with a smile wider than her apron. She often said that every day here was like a stand-up show, thanks to her customers and colleagues. Susanna was assisted by Jerome - the house cat (although he claimed to be a lion on holiday), who had a penchant for making coffees with cat crunches. There was also Roman - a retired magician who couldn't pour milk for anything without conjuring up foam three stories high, and Clare - a student whose job was to fish olives out of drinks they should never go into. Ordinary mornings looked a little different here. Instead of a 'good morning', you'd hear the bang of a falling tray, you'd be greeted at the door by Hieronymus tossing a toy mouse, and your ordered latte would be waiting for you with a cactus-shaped foam. Sandwiches? Well, the sandwiches sometimes disappeared. One Thursday, a man called Witold Augustus, in a checkered coat and with a look on his face as if he was about to declare war on puffins, came into the café. He sat down under the largest of hats - one that could easily fit a bouncy castle underneath. He ordered "something spectacular" and stared at the wall as if looking for a hidden lift. Meanwhile, Roman was trying to teach Jerome the cat the art of juggling cupcakes (with poor results), and Klara was serving coffee with three spoons because she couldn't decide which was the most metal. Suddenly, as Susanna reached for another batch of cinnamon buns, there was a strange sound. As if someone had unrolled ten metres of bubble wrap at once. Everyone fell silent. Their gazes turned to Vytautas, who was just unfolding a huge, colourful umbrella under the table. On its tip was a ... a very suspicious-looking sandwich. Everyone held their breath. Even the cat. Could it be that the whole disappearing sandwich thing was more serious than anyone thought?
