The city on the other side of the mirror
Kasia had never been fond of holidays in the countryside, but this summer she got to stay with her grandmother. The wooden house crackled in the morning and the air was swollen with silence and the smell of herbs.
On the third evening, as a storm clouded the world outside the window, Kasia wandered around the dusty attic, looking for something to distract her thoughts from the overwhelming loneliness. It was then that she spotted an old standing mirror - tall, with a carved frame, cracked in several places. It seemed strangely attractive to her. The surface of the glass was streaked with a hazy glow, and as she came closer, she felt as if something was pulling her inside.
Suddenly her reflection shimmered. The girl touched the glass and felt a pulsing energy under her fingers. The mirror trembled and, to her amazement, pulled her inside. For a moment she floated in the dark void until she finally fell onto the cobbled streets of the mysterious city. The townhouses were tall and the streetlights shone with a pale blue light. The air sparkled with magic, and sounds - as if music mingled with whispers - surrounded her on every side.
The inhabitants - tall, slender beings with silvery eyes - watched her in silence, some with slight smiles, others suspiciously. Kasia felt a chill on the back of her neck. She had the feeling that someone was watching her, someone she couldn't see.
Suddenly, a figure in a purple coat slid out of a dark alley. "We know why you are here, Catherine," she spoke softly, her voice sounding like the echo of muffled bells. "But are you ready to know the truth?"
The girl felt a strange pressure in her stomach. Before she could answer, the lights of the lanterns around her began to fade, and the city trembled, as if something disturbing was about to awaken....
