The City Behind the Glass

The City Behind the Glass
Marek rubbed his eyes and looked once more at the glass doors of the abandoned orangery. The sun was reflected in the cracked panes of glass, and the wind swayed the withered leaves. There was a smell of dampness and something indefinable in the air - like the remnants of magic from a previous century. Paul and Lena stood just behind him, with gaping mouths looking at the unreal glow coming from under the door. This was no ordinary day. It all started with a message on the school chat room: "Whoever finds the City Behind the Glass will have their biggest dream come true". At first, Marek thought it was a joke - after all, such legends always circulated among the older classes. However, that morning, driven by a vague premonition, the three friends set off for the outskirts of the city to see if there was even a hint of truth in the rumour. The orangery looked like it had been abandoned for years, but it was at its door that Lena found a piece of paper, densely scribbled in small writing. "Look! I think it's clues!" - she whispered, handing the piece of paper to Mark. The boy ran his eyes over the contents: "Enter where the light turns its shadow. Stand on the threshold and close your eyes, and what you fear will open your way." A summer storm raged above them. Lightning illuminated the glass, creating bizarre patterns on its surface. Paul walked closer to the door, touched the glass and suddenly his hand disappeared, as if it had dissolved into the air. Lena screamed quietly and Marek grabbed him by the sleeve. "This is no ordinary glass," Paul said through clenched teeth, withdrawing his hand. When they looked at each other, they all knew there was no going back. The smell of magic became palpable and the air on the other side of the glass rippled, as if something very different from the familiar reality awaited them. Marek closed his eyelids and took the first step. Right behind him his friends followed. When he opened his eyes, he realised that they had crossed the border. Before them stretched a city that hadn't existed before - full of shining towers, sky bridges and figures that barely resembled people. A strange laughter came from one of the streets and an intricate, pulsating map began to light up in the middle of the square, projected in the air. At the same moment, everything around them began to change - colours began to ripple, shapes began to dissolve and the familiar world disappeared far behind them. Then a figure with translucent eyes slid out from around the corner and stretched his hand towards them....
