The Case for Yesterday

The Case for Yesterday
The rain rattled on the roof and the attic smelled of dust. Ala and Kuba were helping their grandmother clean out shelves and boxes. In a corner they found a small suitcase with a metal crank handle. On the handle was an inscription: Time Traveller. Grandma smiled quizzically and nodded. Ala opened the suitcase slowly, as if it were made of glass. Inside lay a clock, three buttons and a simple map. The buttons had inscriptions: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Cuba turned the crank and the clock started ticking loudly. The light blinked three times and the map moved. On the paper flashed our house, only very long ago. A door appeared on the wall from a bright light. We could hear bells and the clatter of wooden cart wheels. Ala squeezed Kuba's hand and held her breath. Grandma whispered quietly: Stay together, my explorers. Kuba pressed the Yesterday button and looked at his sister. The door rustled and the threshold spilled like a silver puddle. On that side someone was running, holding a black hat. He stopped and looked straight at the children. He spoke their names, and the light suddenly dimmed. Should they go in now, before the door disappeared completely?
