The Book of Tomorrow's Light
Mira parted the remnants of dust that had fallen from the settling vault with her fingers. She thanked the silence. She had been alone in this library for hours, in the heart of the historic city of Iralis - a place where the sun never rose in the same way twice. The stone corridors lived a life of their own, and magic lamps moved along the walls, casting shadows in animal shapes that no one remembered nowadays.
Mira was always looking for something more here. Her teachers claimed that magic was the science of predicting the unusual. She, however, felt that hidden among the bound books and forgotten records were wonders greater than those known from the lessons.
That evening, as the mist drifted heavily over the city, Mira squeezed between the bookcases in search of a book on the transformations of light. Her hand stopped suddenly on something strangely cool and rough. She slid a large book with a matte black binding off the shelf. Under her fingers, she felt a pulse - as if life was throbbing inside.
She carefully opened the first page. Instead of written text, the paper lit up with a dark blue glow. She saw swirling lines that formed the shape of a map of Iralis, but with the streets tangled together as if someone had drawn them from scratch. The words themselves began to appear before her eyes: "He who reads changes the world. Before the sun rises, you can make one choice that will change everything."
She stilled, staring at the promise of magic greater than anything she had learned so far. At the same moment, a quiet murmur sounded from deep within the library, and a shadow - human but impossibly tall - moved between the bookcases. Mira held her breath, waiting for the next move, the book clutching as if her entire life depended on it....
