The awakening of reality
It all started on Monday morning, just before a computer science lesson. There was a distinctive smell of old dust and heated monitors in the air. The Maria Skłodowska-Curie High School was not a modern school: computer room 23 still remembered the days when Windows XP was the peak of progress. Erik, a high school student with a slightly too vivid imagination and perpetually tangled headphones in his pocket, sat in his customary seat by the window. Next to him, as always, made themselves at home were Julia, the master of sarcasm and coding, and Mati, known for his loud laughs and even louder conspiracy theories.
On this day, everything seemed seemingly ordinary until Erik bent down to pick up a dropped piece of paper and heard a quiet: "Oi, be careful with that foot!". He looked around, convinced it was Julia's joke. But she was too busy typing something into Excel.
Snorting for air, he heard again, "Don't trample the cable, no!" This time the voice was clearly coming from under his tabletop. He leaned over and saw.... nothing. Just tangled cables. Trying to calm himself down, he got up and headed for the computer parts cupboard. On its door hung a dusty placard: "Do not open without teacher permission". As he walked past, the hinges creaked, and Erik, although he knew it was impossible, had the impression that the hinge whispered: "Again someone wants to break into our kingdom...".
He couldn't stand it. He sat back down next to Julia and asked her out of the blue:
- Did you hear something strange? Like someone was talking?
Julia looked at him thoughtfully, tilting her head:
- 'Today I think you felt the Monday atmosphere too much, Erik.
Mati just laughed and tapped his finger on the keyboard:
- Unless your computer is communicating with you. Although I wouldn't be surprised - this thing is older than my old bike.
Then Mati's keyboard spoke up:
- And you, young man, have some respect for your elders!
All three of them froze. Julia dropped her pen, Erik opened his eyes wide and Mati couldn't get a word out for a moment. After a moment, a throaty voice came from the speakers:
- We know you can hear us. We have been waiting for the right moment. Now you have to help us.
Silence fell in the classroom. Only the light from the monitor pulsed like a heartbeat, and the students slowly realised that their school day would never be the same again.
