Did You Know?

Switching to the Night Side

Switching to the Night Side
The old observatory tower had stood empty on the edge of town for years, surrounded by a rusting fence and a sea of nettles. Antek had always ignored the sight of it, passing it on his way to school. Eventually, however, the day came when Lena said with her typical confidence: - If you don't go in there with me, you'll never know what might have happened. That evening the sky was heavy with clouds and the city was plunged into early twilight. They both slipped through a torn-out section of netting and moved ahead, laughing at their own unease. The door to the observatory gave way with a hiss, and the darkness inside engulfed their silhouettes like a gentle wave. The observatory was larger than it appeared. The interior smelled of dust, old paper and distant storms. Len's torch cast a faded light on the graffiti-covered walls. Deep inside the building, behind a massive dome, they came across a spiral staircase leading down into basements that no one had told them existed. They descended for a long time, the echoes reverberating off the stone walls like a whisper. Finally they came to a heavy iron door. Above them was an inscription carved with a sharp tool: "Passage to the Side of Night". - What kind of nonsense is this? - Antek tried to joke, but his voice caught in his throat. Lena pressed her hand against the cool steel. The door gave way, revealing a small chamber full of old mirrors. In the middle stood a large circular mirror framed in tarnished silver. But it did not reflect their silhouettes. Instead, in the depths of the mirrored surface a starry landscape wove - unfamiliar mountains, illuminated by pale lights in the sky, quite different from what they were used to. - 'That's not a mirror,' Lena whispered, looking up with shaky eyes. - It's... a portal. Attracted by a strange magnetism, they walked closer. As Lena stretched out her hand, the panel pulsed with bright light. Trembling with emotion and anxiety, Antek felt the ground beneath his feet cease to be stable. Around them, the light spread wider and wider, and the echo of the old world slowly quieted. Then something - or someone - on the other side moved, as if it had been waiting for them for a long time. Lena looked at Antek once more: - Ready? He did not have time to answer, because the light enveloped them completely and everything around them changed beyond recognition....
