Zosia lived on the edge of an old forest. She liked to listen to the quiet singing of the Młynówka. Every morning she carried a bowl of milk to the homemaker. Grandma used to say: "He guards the chamber and the loaf". One night the flour fell off the shelf by itself. Small, round marks were left on the table. In the morning Zosia heard a whisper from under the porch. "Zosia, come," hummed the wind, but it was not the wind. Out of the bushes came a little lich, the spirit of the forest. He had a moss hat and a twiggy stick. He nodded and looked very serious. "The housefly disappeared at night over the water," he said. Zosia took a torch and bread for courage. She followed the lecher down the path between the ferns. The stream glowed like a thin blue thread. On the bank someone had left her grandmother's wooden spoon. The water trembled and a quiet, alien voice sang. Skylights rolled up from the bottom, like stars. Something large moved just below the water's surface....
